Day 10 ItsAboutTime Orange Beach, AL to Shalimar, FL (Destin) 60 NM

We had a late start today due to dense fog. In fact we had a stutter start because we launched first at 8:45 only to have the fog move back in almost faster than it lifted. So we navigated a U-turn and 3 large oval loops and then a second launch at 9:10.

Boats have sweet spots for speed and performance. (based on most efficient fuel consumption be nautical mile NM) For ItsAboutTime they are a nice leisurely pace (the typical looper pace) of 8.5 to 10.0 knots; [burning 7-8 gallons an hour] the next is after plaining out the boat between 24 knots [burning 37 Gallons an hour, I know crazy that 24 knots and 1.6 gallons a NM is considered good] finally at our Top speed where we are traveling about 30 knots an hour and burning 50 Gallon an Hour.

Every day we are calculating based on weather risks, currents, tides and personal comfort and personal demands traded off against burning fuel or burning sunlight.

So back to Day 10, a late start the unknown of the ICW we chose to do burn fuel and push off the spector of an after dark arrival and docking. 2 1/2 at 20-24 knots and 3 hours at 9 knots put us at Two Georges Marina in Shalimar by 2:45. Chris was the primary Captain today and when we arrived at Two Georges Marine we chose to fuel up and pump out first. the fuel dock had a strong breeze and a tidal current pushing away from the dock and I struggled for probably 15 minutes to get the boat flat against the fuel dock. I just could not get my stern in tight even with the Bow line secure. Nine the less we threw the lines off and I started over again and this time was able to to get “er” on the dock.

Tomorrow in port to take care of some Board business. We are reconsidering our options for Friday.

No hitch hikers today.

Dinner last night at the Wharf in Orange Beach.
Our “on-board” chef made us a Lunch today, turkey & cheese sandwich, grapes, pickle.
The boats we pass and exchange a wave or a hail on the radio makes friends in small ways and big.
I surely hope this was because of the Hurricane and not a poorly trained Captain.

  1. Don’t suppose your yacht was available in a plug-in hybrid version??? Trump’s jet probably gets better gas mileage…
